The imac hard drive has an integrated temperature sensor the imac fans will run at full speed if you replace the hdd without the temperature sensor and or proper connector. Install the ssd into the hd bay and download the ssd fan control application to avoid fan noise easier but less legitimate install the ssd into the hd bay with the owc thermal sensor extremely difficult considerably more expensive but works properly install the ssd into the optical drive bay loose optical drive but no fan issues. If you are upgrading the main bay in any imac late 2009 current besides the 21 5 2013 2013 imac you will need the owc thermal sensor cable. If you are installing an ssd to replace the hdd on imac 2013 and later you don t even need the thermal sensor cable from owc because the heat info will be read through s m a r t. I would use this as a workaround and stil. I would have had to use the sensor anyway as the new drive is mechanical but if you ve purchased an ssd prior to 2015 that you wish to swap in use the temp sensor.
